Hospital Solid Waste Management: Challenges and Solutions for Sustainable Management

Hospital solid waste management has not been adequately implemented, leading to environmental sanitation problems, poor segregation, and inadequate waste management. This situation directly impacts healthcare workers and promotes the spread of infectious diseases, in addition to posing physical, chemical, microbiological, and environmental risks. In recent years, there have been difficulties in complying with current regulations, hindering efforts to control and minimize hospital waste production and mitigate its harmful effects on both the population and the ecosystem. The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency of hospital solid waste management, identifying whether progress has been made or whether deficiencies persist in compliance with the technical standards established for its proper treatment. To this end, a bibliographic review of scientific articles was conducted, revealing that significant shortcomings still exist in the management of this waste. No substantial improvement has been achieved in the system, which represents a continuing challenge for public health in Latin America and globally. In this context, it is imperative to intervene in hospital waste management mechanisms to reduce the health and environmental risks associated with its improper handling.
